Hell is round the corner - Tricky, is that Portishead tune isn't it? One of the few good examples of this genre.

Also Samantha Mumba had a bastardised version of Bowie's Ashes to Ashes.

Can't think of any more off the top of my head except for Ice Ice Baby, although the great Rob Van Winkle (aka Vanilla Ice) claims he came up with that riff all by himself. Messrs Mercury, May, Deacon and Taylor strongly disagreed.

I have a vague recollection they are called "white labels" aren't they?
Either two pop tuned mashed together, or a pop tune with doof doof bits plugged in, pressed illegally (with a plain white label) and sold through the grapevine to dj's. Not just a sample from a song, but the whole thing mixed in. I heard there was a white label of "radiohead - pyramid song" that was a big club hit in ibiza. Hang on, that may have been a legal version (?). Also the club version of "white stripes - 7 nation army" - was that an official release?
I can't remember any good examples of them, but I've heard they are pretty variable.

Vitamin K: I think Dane is looking for a specific versus type songs, not just really shite covers of songs.

Moby Dick: I think you are right with the whole white label thing there.

vitamin K - yeah it's a specific vs. thing I'm looking for

Moby Dick - white labels are more than just bastard pop. White labels are traditionally records printed pre-release and pre-artwork for radio jocks etc. So white labels have evolved from promo releases to encompass that uber-cool image of being a release that's not yet official and also a release that's untraceable by people chasing copyright. Another name for bastard pop released on vinyl is 'booties' which are vs. style mashup tunes.

I know all about it but can't find much online.

Geez, you try and help and this is what you get.

I'm with you now that further details have come to light although the examples I listed above quite clearly fit the original description of "one songs vocals over another songs tunes".

sure, didn't mean to sound rude but it's DJ mashup I'm after.

There's that Christina Aguilera Genie in a Bottle, who is the original music by and what tune is it in the mashup?

I hear it a fair bit when I got out clubbin'. Here's few, don't know the artists who taken them off are tho.

California Dreaming
7 Nation Army
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lithium
New Sensation
Summer Rain
Seek & Destroy
Betterman (pearl jam)
Song 2

That's all I can think of right now. Some of them are remixed versions of the original and others are completely bastardized.

And QOTSA of course.

On the "One Perfect Day" soundtrack there's a vs. version of No One Knows, kinda industrial-ish techno with the vox over the top.

I've got quite a few Kelis mash ups cos' I love Milkshake. There's Kelis vs. Franz Ferdinand (which is a vast improvement for FF) - Take me out for a milkshake, Kelis vs Tone Loc - Funky Cold Milkshake and there are also loads of Reggae ones because the Milkshake Riddim was pretty big in J.A.

The one I'm really after is Milkshake Busters - which is Milkshake vs. Ghostbusters.

okay then, time for a bit more about this...

one thing is that it's been around and had a real upsurge a few years back. there are lots of boot-mixes, and all are technically illegal. Possibly my faves were/are 'smells like teen booty' (Nirvana + Destiny's child) and a mix of No scrubs by TLC and a very early Human League cut called being boiled.

the most important site on the web for it all seemed to be http://www.boomselection.info/The%20Boom%20selection.

The TIGERBEAT6 label and KID 606 did a lot to use and abuse the form and release all kinds of cool shit that was mix/chop/rip sorta stuff ... also DJ rupture's goldteeththief mix album was pretty spesh...

i still have some CD's of this sorta crap somewhere...

Zappa - Why don't you Like Me?

Take Michael Jackson and Billie Jean, and mix it up with Tell me you Love Me

Does it count if the bastardizer uses their own material?
