rosaline yuen after the show

This release by Melbourne singer/songwriter Rosaline Yuen is a follow up to her debut EP Garden from 2008 and is a precursor to a forthcoming debut album. Each of the tracks is sufficiently different enough to give the impression that Yuen is versatile and cannot be easily pigeon-holed as just another Goodrem or Higgins.

The CD kicks of with After The Show which plays around with a juxtaposition between the idea of special new love, you know the type, kicking the autumnal leaves in the park while holding hands, that type of thing and some darker, brooding jealous thoughts about where the boy ends up late at night. Open Beast is Yuen vamping it up. "Here I come out of the jungle, Here I come nothing but trouble." Yes, I grant you that a lyric like that might seem a tad naff written down but Yuen has the voice to pull it off and for the most part the music helps her.

The final track is Hotel Room and its bright and breezy vibe reminded me a lot of Lenka’s The Show. That is a compliment in case you were wondering. All up an interesting release from Yuen and I’ll be keen to hear the album to see if she can maintain her versatility.
