Angry Boys - Angry Boys Official Soundtrack (Album)
If this wasn’t Chris Lilley I certainly wouldn’t be interested, but there is something about his charismatic eyes, his way of pleasing many genres of life, and his adaptability in television that has always kept me interested.
This collection brought to us is for the Angry Boys fans because it’s got every slice of the show’s music contained in just one cd and one dvd. The album contains all the hits and the crass numbers that always belong in any Lilley sequence. S.Mouse is the main contender and one song from Jen Okazaki. Not only are we given seventeen songs of hits (say what you will here), we are also given those hits that are remixed and full of hip hop bites and squares. A few delightful mixes here and a couple that were a bit on the ‘over remix’ side for me but nonetheless, this is the collection for the big fans or perhaps the new fans.
I’ve heard the show didn’t take off in the USA, no surprises there, maybe they don’t get this style of humour – Hey Americans, it’s a mockumenary, it’s not real! Its way better than most of the reality shows I see from that side of the globe. Look at how much Aussie’s love Kath N Kim and The Castle – both plummeted over there. If you don’t get it, it’s your loss. Sure, Lilley is jaw dropping at times, take Squashed Nigga, sounds derogatory but it’s a slow song filled with sympathy and just you wait until you see S.Mouse shine in the glossy filmclip, look out for the shots taken in black and white. The show is actually about going through the different male role models in life including their influences, ambitions and dreams.
The last part of the cd is the scores and theme music which kinda says it all really. Full of classical (Melbourne Symphony Orchestra), rock and African drum, encased in all the dramatic accolades that are present in the tv series. This music propels you forward from scene to scene and the music makes this tv series different to other Lilley shows because of these scores that were written especially for the series to be more challenging. Note that Lilley wrote all music for the series.
The DVD takes you on a journey through film clips including Nathan and Daniel’s highlights from the tv show. Watch their eyes transform you during Bedroom Rap and if you don’t smile then something is seriously wrong. Pure gold, then check out the boys doing the Wedding Rap. Following this is Gran doing her awesome friday night entertainment for the locked up boys – Rehab and Moving On Up – hilarious stuff. Most of the clips here are from the tv show but that doesn’t matter, put altogether it’s a montage of all the highlights with a tune! Check out Slap My Elbow clip, professionally filmed, made to be similar to the American clips and it shows. Lastly is a Sampology Entertainment selection which is a mix of all clips melted together in a 12” mega mix style.
Go Behind the scenes and hear commentary from people who worked with Lilley on the show, see the classical musicians and hear the comments from the crew about the clips, how much work went into them and how much fun they were to make. Check out the huge smiles all round in this section.
Lastly you can watch the Prince of Wales gig that S.Mouse performed at in 2011 as a free concert which was a first in first served basis. Two girls on stage in bikinis cruise with S.Mouse as he launches into all his hits starting off with Animal Zoo, Grandmother Fucker (oh dear), E=MC2, Obama, Black Balls, Poo on You and after the encore Slap My Elbow. S.Mouse shows his love for dogs and the crowd shows their love for the S.Mouse. Will we see more songs from this rising star?!
