Am I missing something? Faker have become fairly big in recent times, due to the proliferation of their hit single This Heart Attack throughout mainsteam radio and the commercial breaks of many TV stations. And yet, I find their music to be soulless and unoriginal. Oh right, I... yep. Mainstream success and soulless unoriginal music kinda go hand in hand.
Perhaps I'm being too harsh on the Sydney lads, led by frontman Nathan Hudson. Perhaps their music has hidden depth. Perhaps it isn't as boring as it initially sounds. Well, I gave Be The Twilight a listen, and I'm overjoyed to announce that, no. Just.. no. Their music is flat and dull, an auditory twin for Hudson's vocal “talents”. The successful This Heart Attack is the only song on this album that is remotely interesting, and even this song is only carried by the catchy chorus.
Any sense of character in the music itself is stripped away by an overly clean production effort, and the overall meaninglessness of the songs is only amplified. What more can I say? Gotta get away, not coming back.
Ahem. Ah. The bonus disc. Look, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this afterthought. The acoustic numbers (Sleepwalking, Pet Semetary, Deathwish...) actually flatter Faker's sound, and are well worth a listen. The remixes are pretty good too, featuring Miami Horror (This Heart Attack), Grafton Primary (another This Heart Attack) and Daniel Johns-lover Paul Mac (Are You Magnetic?)
