Blake Scott and The Festival of Stable Living - Blake Scott and the Festival of Stable Living (EP)
Blake Scott and the Festival of Stable Living are a three piece from Melbourne and if their EP is anything to go by, these guys are going to make quite an impact on Australian music.
Not know what to expect at all when I got this EP, I ripped it to iTunes and put it on my iPod right before I went to work and didn’t think much more about it. After work I went to my car and got out my iPod and put this EP to have a listen and it really impressed me which is hard to do at 10pm when I’m exhausted.
To try to describe the music I would say would be a cross between Tom Waits and You Am I with a bit of Jeff Buckley thrown in as well. The first song Evening Scars sounds like a jilted love song with a really strong beat. Like a raucous love anthem with a very Rain Dogs by Tom Waits sound.
Blake’s rough voice and haunting melodies steal the show in the Crop Dusters in The City. An eerie sounding song conjuring up visuals of a love/hate relationship with a city, walking the streets at night time.
Are You Alarmed? starts with a beautiful piano introduction and is later accompanied by Scott’s raw vocals, working its way into a more upbeat climax.
City Lights and Factories is a good closing song for the EP. A soft solemn guitar line sounding like it was recorded in a closet or something gives the song a very intimate and personal feeling. I really enjoyed this album. The song writing sounds very mature and solid for an EP. I find myself really looking forward to hearing more from this band.
