Having just joined the Facebook group ‘WSFM made me love music’, the arrival of Eric Clapton’s album entitled “Complete Clapton” was well timed. More than a just another ‘best of’, Complete Clapton is a mini biography depicting the musical journey and growth of Singer/Songwriter Eric Clapton. Although hailing from the UK, Clapton’s influences are in American blues which is an evident foundation throughout the collection. Songs from his solo careers and formative years as a member of other classic bands make up this double disc collection of songs.
Complete Clapton consists of his originals, covers and collaborations in either their studio or unplugged form. Clapton also established a reputation as being a successful guitarist as has been able to work with many great artists. Credits in the album sleeve include legendary names such as Harrison, Hendrix, Robert Johnson, BB King, JJ Cale.
‘I feel free’ is a nice start to disc one with uplifting tempo and harmonies. There are songs to fit all moods on this album, from the upbeat to more mellow tracks.
Clapton fought many personal demons and setbacks throughout his life. Originals compositions such as ‘Tears in heaven’ written about the son he tragically lost is a beautiful ballad. ‘My father’s eyes’ on disc two is of similar emotional sentiment.
‘Sunshine of your love’ is a catchy song that builds momentum as it progresses. ‘Layla’ is passion filled song proves Clapton can rock
Covers allow for Clapton to pay homage and put his own spin on tracks such as
‘Cocaine’ (Cale), ‘I shot the sheriff’ (Marley), ‘After midnight’ (Cale), ‘Knocking on heavens door’ (Dylan), ‘Sweet Home Chicago’ (Johnson).
Collaborations in songs as Badge (Harrison), Riding with the king (King), Ride the river (Cale) celebrates the convergence of artists. The songs capture a moment in musical history, so that is quite special to hear.
Listening to the album, I’ve realized I was lucky enough to grow up with these songs in the background. ‘Complete Clapton” has it all. It is hard to mention all the songs on this album. You’ll have your own favourites that you can identify with. The 36 tracks include Clapton’s hits and his more obscure tracks (obsure in the sense that you may not necessarily hear them on WSFM as much as the hits) can be found on this release. It is delightful to listen to, his distinctive voice and musicianship adds to the timeless quality of the tracks. His musical influences are evident, but he is also influential to a generation music lovers.
