A Man Called Son - Dear Liza (Single)
There aren’t too many artists who can boast being able to basically reach out and touch you like the warm and inviting embrace of a nonna who’s happy to see you and holding a tray of homemade lasagne. And yet, A Man Called Son, the side-project from The Narcotics’ Simon J. Pearlman does just that. Instantly.
Pearlman has just released “Dear Liza”, his first since his 2010 debut record, “Ruins Of Your Town”. The title track sees Pearlman at his cheeky best, not taking himself too seriously as he uses the tune and partial lyrics from “There’s a hole in the bucket” but replaced by “There’s a hole in my life vest, dear Liza, dear Liza”. Musically though he has painted sounds with a 60s brush and keeps things upbeat and melodic or in shorthand, Beatlesque.
The b-side is “Readers Choice”, a self-described, “wistful ballad”. That description is pretty much on the money as it takes a much softer turn then the aforementioned, but still manages to come up all bottled sunshine and gorgeous morning dew. It also could’ve been an Oh Mercy song seeing as it’s such serene indie pop.
In short, there aren’t too many occasions where you’d actively encourage someone to be embraced warmly by a man called son (particularly in the dead of the night). However, make an exception and you’ll find he’ll brighten your evening. Or morning. Or afternoon, because it really is that sweet and light.
