Various Artists - Dillanthology 1 (Album)
James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J Dilla or Jay Dee was an influential Detroit-based Hip-Hop and Soul producer. He worked with many acts, including Janet Jackson, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, and his own group, Slum Village. He died in 2006 from a cardiac arrest due to complications from lupus. Dillanthology, Volume 1 is a collection of 11 standout tracks put together by Jay Dee.
Starting with Runnin’ by The Pharcyde, the album creates a smooth, soulful aesthetic characterised by so many of Jay Dee’s songs. The harmonious vocals and old saxophone samples create a pleasing mix of old and new. Didn’t Cha Know by Erykah Badu simply simmers with her unique, seductive voice, and the understated instrumentals.
Stakes Is High by De La Soul is a funky highpoint with its sample-happy chorus and laidback feel. Dynamite by The Roots has an earthy groove and a rousing refrain of “C'mon, touch this Illa-Fifth Dynamite.” The whole album has a laidback groove, most apparent on the suitably chill ‘I Believe in You’ by Amp Fiddler.
Finishing with Dolla by Steve Spacek, this album is pure soul and smooth hip-hop. There is not one weak track, and they all flow nicely, with the mood of the album remaining consistent. With only 11 tracks, this is by no means definitive, but a nice introduction or reminder of the influence and talent of Jay Dee. Keep a lookout for the subsequent volumes of Dillanthology.
