YVES KLEIN BLUE DRAW ATTENTION TO THEMSELVES

While years ago people thought there was something in the water in WA due to the large number of excellent artists to come out of the region, it seems that people are now beginning to talk about Queensland in a similar light. And when you listen to Yves Klein Blue’s debut EP, Draw Attention To Themselves, it is pretty obvious why this is the case.

The Brisbane quartet produces feel-good pop music of a similar ilk to their friends, The John Steel Singers. The disc opens with the sweet pop track Blasphemy, and this is propelled by the vocals of Michael Tomlinson, who sounds reminiscent of Ray Davies of The Kinks. However, mid-song Tomlinson declares: “I believe in something else” and the music shifts direction, resulting in a rockier track.

The start of 19 is marked with the haunting creeks of an old dungeon but then the mood lightens and the lyrics are about you being the sun in a person’s eyes. Meanwhile, Silence Is Distance is like an Arctic Monkeys track.

Polka is an odd song as it fuses the Living End’s rockabilly with Britpop sounds and the beat of a children’s song from a Disney movie. A full twenty-second gap elapses before the final track, (A Bookend). An instrumental three-minute solo piano song, it sounds like a tune played inside a jewellery box, which has a ballerina dancing on top.

In sum, the release is a fun slice of pop-rock songs using eclectic sounds and varying genres to produce a dance-worthy and absolutely pleasing result.
