Put your hand up if you heard Midnight Juggernaut’s song ‘Shadows’ a while ago and liked it. Same. And those people whose hands didn’t go up, I’m guessing you are unattractive.
The Midnight Juggernaughts’s album, ‘Dystopia’ is an impressive little number. And if you’re reading this thinking ‘well, what does that mean ‘impressive’? I think the way a donkey can see all four of its legs at the same time is ‘impressive’. Are you saying this album is a donkey? ‘Impressive’ seems a vague and inadequate description.
Although ‘Dystopia’ wears its influences proudly on its mirror ball coloured sleeve, it is still a great sounding beast in its own right. It is track after track of irresistible sounding bass and drums littered with electronic sounds and hook-laden vocals, some of which would not be out of place in an 80’s skating rink. Indeed, their dreamy synths sounds and punchy beats take me back to that time in 1985 where I would skate around my local skating rink with abandon, hand in hand with my teenage beau. This, of course, never happened because I was five years old then and people would have, quite rightly, accused my teenage sweetheart of taking advantage of a minor.
It would be wrong, however, to assume that this album is entirely a flashback to another decade, because it isn’t. There are just many head nods to that era…..see track five ‘Worlds Converged’, with its eye of the tiger guitar and Bowie-esque vocals. And I, personally, will buy anyone a snickers bar who doesn’t nod their head to the infectious sounds of track seven ‘Road to Recovery’.
Does it matter that the aforementioned track screams at me ‘this sounds a lot like Daft Punk, you pussy bitch!’ Does it really matter that the keys in the first track sounds eerily similar to those of that ‘Starlight’ single that was around a few years back? (You know the one with potato in the film clip? Well, I thought it was a potato…anyone?) Does it really matter that the working title to the title track ‘Dystopia’ was ‘We like Air a lot so we flogged this song from their laptop while they were off buying croissants and made it ours’? No it doesn’t. You know why? Because they are good tracks people. Good tracks. Sure, you could lay the boot in about some of the tracks sounding a tad unoriginal but what about the goodness that is all through this album? What about the exceptional production? The most excellent falsetto vocals? The big fat waves of electronic goodness that will wash over you when you listen to this loud? What about that hey??? You didn’t really think that through did you? No, so before you open your big fat mouth again and spew more poison I advise you to take this album for what it is…a firecracker of an album guaranteed to make you gyrate your hips with pleasure and smile like an idiot.
Now, hands up those who want to go out and hear this live and loud as soon as possible? Those of you who didn’t put your hands up are definitely unattractive and need to stop being so vindictive as it will put lines around your eyes.
