Final Song

However morbid, I like the idea behind this album. If you could choose your own Final Song, what would it be? Would it be a song that represents your life or would choose that one song to sing , that would be the last time you would scream your lungs out? Physical Music has rounded up a collection of DJs and asked them what song they would choose to close the final encore of life. This is resulted in a great collection of songs, although missing a story behind each song - something that will hopefully be included in the liner notes to the eventual CD release. Although I can understand it would be hard for most people to give up the story behind their songs, as it is a personal, introspective choice.

The choices they have made for the album are as varied as could be imagined. From the eerie album opening of DJ T selecting Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie a piano piece, that embodies a sadness right through to the subdued Sit Down, Stand Up by Radiohead. Each song captures a moment that we don’t like to think about, but every DJ in this compilation has laid their heart and soul on the line to give us an insight into that moment.

Including the likes of Richie Hawtin, DJ Hell, Ricardo Villalobos, François K and Kevin Saunderson. You can see each DJ has taken their own spin on the question, it’s great to see David Holmes choose a classic Beach Boys track – ‘Till I Die and Chloé choosing one of her own tracks. Ewan Pearson’s choice of Peggy Lee’s Is That All There Is? is an interesting, albeit humourous choice and I cannot for the life of me imagine that being played as the casket leaves his funeral.

Whether or not you have chosen your song to be played at your funeral, or the song you want to serenade as you lay on your deathbed – This compilation of some of the world’s most recognized DJs decisions is sure to please. The choices are intriguing to say the least, but I’m sure hidden underneath are some deep reasons for each and every choice, just as there would be with yours and mine. Since this is Final Song #01 I hope this is the first in a series of album based on the same theme.
