Considering Bliss N Eso have performed two sold out tours, headlined festivals, represented the hip-hop genre at Melbourne’s Sound Relief concert and got three tracks on Triple J’s Hottest 100; I had enormous expectations from their ARIA award winning album, Flying Colours: Live.Flying Colours: Live is a monster 18- track album, which hits you over the head as soon as it starts.
The first three songs are a trifecta of Bliss N Eso madness; Woodstock 2008, Eye of the Storm and Bullet and a Target are a lethal combination, which will blow you away. After listening to these three in a row, you’re definitelyengulfed in their music. All the tracks on this album seem to be sung with an explosive amount of passion. Destiny’s Lane and Field of Dreams show the band’s ability to master a wide range of hip-hop elements; displaying their slower melodic side, held together by controlled vocals and wild DJ mixes.
After you are shown Bliss N Eso’s range of music, we are welcomed back to another hit: The Sea is Rising. This is a feel good track with up-lifting lyrics; by the end of it you will be chanting peace, love and unity. It is clear that Flying Colours Live has been carefully structured, with a healthy balance of funky tracks, such as $5 Steak and Royal Flush, to slower peaceful tracks, like Never Give Up.
The album is massive, and jumps between commercially popular songs, to more underground hip-hop tracks; which I found enjoyable. If the album alone isn’t enough for you, with the deluxe edition you also score a DVD featuring the boys playing their Flying Colours show, at Sydney’s Metro Hotel. The gig is explosive and dynamic, leaving you with a huge desire to see them live.
Also featured on the DVD is a short documentary portraying the making of Bullet and a Target; where Bliss N Eso travel to South Africa, drawing inspiration for their music. The DVD, combining Bliss N Eso’s live stage performance and their trip to South Africa is a great mix, accompanying the album perfectly. This is a feel good album, which gets you bopping along to each of their catchy tracks. The piece incorporates crazy mixes, head spinning vocal work and meaningful messages.
After giving the songs a listen, you will agree, this is an album worth the price tag. Flying Colours Live will definitely graduate to the CD player in my car for many repeats.
