Soft Tigers - Gospel Ambitions

Soft Tigers have put out a nice little album here. I hate to start off with criticisms, but here goes: I feel as though there’s a lot of filler between a couple of great songs and it all sounds a bit the same. Other than that, it’s not bad. Keep in mind that my opinion may be skewed by the fact that I’ve run out of milk for my tea and I’m feeling mildly irritated because of it.

So, from here on in let’s talk about the good stuff on the album.

The cover art amuses me no end. Happy little dots everywhere. Good stuff.

The album starts off with ‘intro’. This is really annoying. It’s just a bunch of crap smooshed together and the band talking while making bothersome noises. Why would put the listener through that pain and not let them start listening to what would be a wonderful opening track?! WHY? Sorry, I was planning to talk about the good stuff…

Well, what should be the opening song ‘Everything’s Fucked’ is excellent. It could be because it’s simply expressing something that’s axiomatic. Everything is fucked; it’s why the track resonates so truthfully with the me.

Then at song number four comes ‘Makin’ Love’ – another great song. “We’re making love tonight and it’s more than… (dramatic pause) sex” sings a discordant group. It sounds so sweet. This song is just disgustingly cute – in a good way. It’s a little story of a saccharinely smitten couple and it makes me gag with jealousy and happiness.

What else? ‘Mr Ice Cream’ is a silly song. It’s supposed to be their club song; which I suppose explains the silliness.

‘Karate’ is an equally silly song and finds its place at number eleven on the record. It’s clubbier than ‘Mr Ice Cream’ and I think it might sound less ridiculous to a room full of drugged up ravers.

All in all, the album’s pretty good…but the above songs are the best and the rest of them feel a little ‘meh, take it or leave it’. Your choice though – take it or leave it.
