Granddance is an album with such a dreamlike quality yet it manages to release the little indie rocker in us all, quite a feat for a sophomore alblum. But Dappled Cities Fly are not a band to shy away from experimentation, and the Sydney lads have managed to create an imaginative album which floats from the synthesised sounds of keyboards (thanks to new member Ned Cooke) and effects pedals to crisp guitar and drums.
Wanting to move towards a bigger sound than what their debut acheived, Dappled Cities worked with Jacquire King (Modest Mouse) and Jim Fairchild (Granddaddy) to mix and produce an individual sound for each track.
Beginning with falsetto voice gliding through the speakers, first track 'Holy Chord' leads us into an anthem-like rhythm before familiar drums and guitar take over. There is a slight feel of Arcade Fire here, but comparisons aside, Dappled Cities Fly have created a sound which stands entirley on its own.
'Beach' is an ethereal little number, tapping into the feeling of dunking your head under the water while you're in a bath - voices echo and bounce and soft electro-screams in the background carry the listener through the song, stirring up memories of hot sand and salty water.
Recently featured as Triple J's Album of the Week, Granddance has 'early masterpiece' written all over it, and is being unleashed on Australian audiences before its release in the US early next year. Quickly establishing themselves as a band pushing the boundaries of the lack-lustre indie sounds getting around lately, Dappled Cities Fly are destined for big things here and overseas, so get in quick and see them now my friends, or at least get your hands on this brilliant album.
