Hands in the Air - Ground Components

The Ground Components are a local band with big ideas. This review is purely on the single ‘Hands in the Air’ from the debut album from this band, An Eye for a Brow, a Tooth for a Pick. This album was released in September last year with a great response. This particular song was written and composed by the Ground Components organ/keyboardist Dallas Paxton. He shows much skill and anthem-esque technique in creating this ‘garage pop anthem’.

The Ground Components have released a few very attractive singles including this, the covers continue their animal themes as well with a large close up mug shot of an eagle. As well as this single some other animals that have featured in the Ground Components artworks include an owl for the ‘On Your Living Room Floor’ single and the aggressive ape for their debut album.

The band are launching this single up and down the east coast of Australia as well as all over this great nation. They would be a great band to check out if you enjoy their songs that have been featured on Triple J, ABC Radio and RRR etc. 'Hands in the Air' is one of those songs that takes very little time to get used to or enjoy, perhaps that’s why they used it as a single. A real sing-along and dance song once the chorus hits and yell worthy. The dual vocals thickens up the song as well as the awesome bass that really stands out in this song. A real drinking song.

This single, unlike the others does not come without extra benefits as well, included on this disk is some B-Sides including a rendition of Aretha Franklin's ‘Do Right Woman, Do Right Man’. This song is one of the songs the band has been itching to record. Although it is a lot slower than a lot of their other stuff, it is a lot more broken down and simplified than their strong pop indie songs. This really brings them back to their roots and reminds me of the camp sing-along’s that some experience at any musicians party. It really builds up into a really strong and powerful song with great harmonies and use of organ. They really have fun with this song and you can tell that they are really passionate about this song and would enjoy experimenting with this song. Any big Aretha Franklin fan would be proud of this rendition.

The other B-side is an original written and sung by the second guitarist for the band called ‘Sweet Nothing‘, Robert Bravington. This song is an even slower song with very different vocal than the raspy voice of Joe, this really shows their country roots and love for rhythm and blues. This is definitely a really lovely love song that uses its lyrics well and a structure that I have grown to appreciate. Although it is less rock does not make it less fun or exciting to listen to. A great listen all over.
