The elfin Bertie Blackman displays a combination of vulnerability and rock savvy in this release.
The single, "Hold Me Close", begins with a simple guitar riff padding Bertie's delicate sighs. When the bass and drums kick in, the song takes on a rockier edge and her voice sharpens to meet the dare. Surprisingly, the kitten growls!
"Cannonball" shows a more intimate side of the songstress while "Backyard" displays the same formula as "Hold Me Close", with the lone guitar riff and vocals. This latter song never really delivers.
Unfortunately, in this release, Bertie seems to be more about style than substance and this doesn't favourably build on her earlier body of work.
