This little package is one for those with a little patience.

The first spin of this, the second single from Soft Tigers; mightn’t do anything special to you. Karate opens with a faux radio conversation that may cause an eye roll. Track Two includes another conversation in the form of an answering machine message; which again may cause an eye roll. M.A.R.I.A seems upbeat and fun while the remix of it sounds just like any other.

Fortunately, the more spins this CD gets, the more special it seems. Hidden amongst the pretentious and pointless banter of Karate is a clever use of synthesized samples teamed with a clever recording technique concocted choir that encapsulates a disco mood. An array of electronic string sounds mid-way through contributes to a lavishly tacky but great nineties sound.

The second track has a ballad feel that is only interrupted by a sweet wa-wa hook that is as smooth and hypnotizing as a ladies man trying to put the moves on an unsuspecting pretty lass. But the hooks’ use in such a short section means that the ladies man fails to seal the deal and the pretty lass is left bored and less than impressed.

Praise is necessary for the inclusion of previous single M.A.R.I.A. Its danceable tune is just so, so painfully infectious.

The M.A.R.I.A remix fails to fall far from past assumptions. The random beeps, beats and buzzes make it seem like an unnecessary time-filler.

The more spins this CD gets, the more special it seems; but despite numerous spins, it seems that the handmade ink-splattered cover is most special.
