Laura Izibor’s Let the Truth Be Told is a nothing special sort of record. It leans towards the r’n’b genre, but not in that terrible ringtone sort of way; rather, more like those songs Alicia Keys wrote once that weren’t annoying. It’s rnb, it’s soul; it’s pleasant to hear. She has opened up for Aretha Franklin and India Arie which adds cred, I suppose.

Her songs have been used in TV shows and movies. She makes this type of music. The type you hear in the background and it sets an atmosphere but it doesn’t stand strong enough on its own; it only works in conjunction with your favourite characters in anticipated scenes. Not that Ms Izibor isn’t a talented woman. Her voice is quite pleasant to listen to and the songs are kind of nice. This is not the sort of music I’d ever imagine deciding I was in the mood to listen to, but I enjoyed Let the Truth Be Told. It’s nothing too special but it definitely isn’t offensive in any way. I think that may just be its problem, though. It is a little too average.

All the songs are sweet and based around love and truth and understanding and blah blah and she seems like such a lovely person and I mean, she’s IRISH and singing r’n’b, that’s kind of a refreshing thing. But the whole record is just a bit too meh....nothing to get excited about. And the packaging certainly doesn’t help. Cheap, Australian-Idol-photoshoot-looking pictures and really off-putting use of green and brown and yellow colours. It’s good to see that she has written all the songs herself and it’s good to see her being classy, unlike many of her genre companions (she’s fully-clothed in every photo). It’s also real good that she has a great voice and that there isn’t a single bad track on the album. But unless you were into this sort of thing to begin with, there is nothing there to draw you in.

Nothing extraordinary. But certainly nothing to complain about.
