The main reason I've struggled to love this song is because I like harping back to the days whenButterfingers were seemingly radio proof. The good old days when most radio stations wouldn't have bothered with the Brisbane crew because their tunes were too distasteful shall we say? Well at least that was most likely the case when "Everytime" and "Yo Mama" first surfaced. "I Love Work" was slightly less volatile as was "Get Up Outta the Dirt," and "FIGJAM" struck a balance between the afore mentioned singles. It somewhat pleased both parties. So where does that leave the band's latest offering "Nothin' Much Happens"? Well I'd say it's a little lack luster. It doesn't live up to the charm of any of the previous hits.
Butterfingers' latest effort unfortunately isn't quite as witty as a lot of the back catalogue. It's missing the cringe factor, the controversy and most importantly the humour. Who can say no to a punny little tune with a few expletives to make it just that bit more enticing and lovable? I can't. Lyrics are undoubtedly a huge part of hip hop and every effort is made to get each word and each line of a song perfect and it's not like the lyrics of "Nothin' Much Happens" aren't perfect. They make sense and they tell a story. It's just not a very interesting story, but then again that may have been the aim. Not a lot happens in the song so I guess you could say it stays true its title. I mean essentially the lyrics discuss the life and times of somebody's pay cycle so you've got to ask yourself, is that really the most riveting and engaging content for a song?
However, it's fair to say that every Butterfingers song has its moment. Even if it's a short-lived moment. More than anything else, the chorus lets the single down. It's without an edge, but those punchy and highly amusing lyrics I've come to expect from the band, are not completely lacking in "Nothin' Much Happens." There are traces of them littered throughout the tightly written verses just not enough to satisfy my eager ears. Undoubtedly, the song wouldn't be quite so average had the chorus and the narrative been a little more risque and ear-catching. Still it's not a bad effort. I only hope the singles that follow are a bit more of a return to form.
