Various Artists - OMFGG: Original Music Featured On Gossip Girl No. 1 (Album)
If the title didn’t make your inner 21st century tech-savvy tween giggle, then maybe the track list might tickle your fancy. Gossip Girl has been a guilty pleasure of mine for some time now (I justify it by placing it in the so-bad-it's-good category) but the one genuinely decent part of the show is its soundtrack.
Josh Schwartz, father of The O.C, has also whored off his other baby to the legions of lol-ing teenagers eager for their next over-priced fashion fix. The soundtrack features obvious indie dance floor favourites The Teenagers and Crystal Castles and my least favourite Kooks songs Do You Wanna? in addition to some less obvious choices.
The surprise addition sits at the top of the track list, The Kills'Sour Cherry is dirty and a little old school like all the Kills tracks; it’s a deceiving start to a predominantly pop mix. Phantom Planet, on the other hand, is the complete opposite after Schwartz helped relaunch the guys in public recognition with The O.C. I maintain that Do the Panic is one of their greatest songs and, dare I say, better than California.
Like all compilations, OMFGG starts out pretty strong but fades into blah pretty quickly. But I guess it doesn’t really matter anyway seeing as the majority of Schwartz’s audience probably only download the ones they like, much like they do the show which fails to air in Australia. If they thought this little taste of the shows featured music was going to appease the commercially influenced taste buds of today’s teens, they are going to be very disappointed. The kids would have already downloaded the entire back catalogue, bought the t-shirts, cut off the sleeves, snuck into a gig and thrown up their Cruisers in a side alley by the time CD was released.
