papa vs pretty

The good thing about Papa vs Pretty is that they’re one of those Australian bands that manages to make people pay attention to their music, and they gain a bit of recognition and get a good buzz going about them, but not yet to the point where you want to scratch your eyes out every time they’re mentioned, so they luckily maintain their indie cred. And despite their terrible band name, they’re still a likeable bunch of kids. It’s also a good thing that they’ve got some pretty fantastic songs on their self-titled EP.

I’d heard of this band well before I actually ever heard their songs. They’re constantly mentioned here and there and they’re always playing gigs at this and that place, and I always tune into the radio when they’re saying “...and that was Papa vs Pretty out of Sydney” but I could never associate their name with any particular sound. Luckily listening to the EP made me realise I already knew these songs – I’d heard most, and Citizen #1 I’d of course heard numerous times. Papa vs Pretty make songs with a touch of cuteness and naivety and a sprinkle of jaded teenage emotions. T

hey come wrapped in a lovely indie rock package which is impossible to criticise. There is enough innocence in the music to make you want to give them a chance and appreciate their efforts, but enough talent too, to keep your attention after your initial “awww” response. The songs are fun, they’re catchy and you’ll remember the chorus of at least one track off the EP.

There’s a ballad (but it’s not the song called Ballad), to make the girls swoon, I assume, but whilst it’s not a bad track at all, Papa vs Pretty do a much better job of making songs that indie kids can dance to.
