Epicure - Quietly Into The Night

On Wednesday 24th February, 2010 a somber message appeared on the website of the band which has been Ballarat’s most successful export over the past decade, Epicure.

It read, in part, “So here it is…the end of my world as I know it…sorry friends, but the May tour will be Epicure’s last…sob sob. There’s no one reason, but let’s just say it’s become impossible for the band to continue…”

It was signed ‘Juan x’ and was the beginning of the end for a band that has given 10 years, 4 studio albums, a scattering of EPs and hundreds of live performances around Australia.

Friday 18th April, 2010 sees the release of Quietly Into the Night – An Epicure Anthology. The band has selected an array of their favourites including singles, B-Sides and live tracks.

Also included is a selection of videos and behind-the-scenes footage displaying the life and career of a band that has supported numerous Aussie bands including The John Butler Trio, Silverchair and Powderfinger, as well as US act Live and UK act Gomez, and sold in excess of 30,000 albums since the release of their debut album Fold back in 2000.

This 16 track anthology encompasses a range of tracks from 'Armies Against Me' (taken from the album The Goodbye Girl, 2004) which is undoubtedly Epicure’s most successful and well known track, to ‘Nights in White Satin’, a cover of the 1967 hit from The Moody Blues.

In between you will find ‘Life Sentence’ and ‘Self Destruct in 5’ (both from The Goodbye Girl), ‘Down in Flames’ and ‘Tightrope Walker’ (the single most downloaded track from the band’s catalogue - both from Main Street, 2005) and ‘Snakes and Foxes’, ‘Landslide’ (the band’s biggest selling iTunes track in recent months) and ‘When That Hurricane Blows Through’ (all taken from Postcards from a Ghost, 2008) amongst others.

When Epicure bid us all adieu with their final tour in May I would imagine there being more than one tear shed from fans. And with their knack for writing forlorn melodies and tales of heartbreak the mood will be set accordingly and provide yet another reason to shed a tear or two at their passing. And with that Epicure will fade quietly into the night…but they will never be forgotten.
