the gin club rain single

The Gin Club are so versatile this latest release from the Brisbane multi-instrumentalist collaborators exemplifies everything they are good at. Echoing sounds of early 60’s folk, pop, blues, and rock, the group performing roster is much alike Broken Social Scene and Architecture in Helsinki. I was a fan on this revolving performance group since their album Junk and I’m so glad they have come back.

The bass is so prominent in Rain and this makes way for a great rock solid performance from The Gin Club. You can definitely hear their influence in the track; from Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and The Band, to more contemporary rock outfits. There are so many different things going on in this track, and each time I listened to the tune I picked up on something new; from the interesting percussion to the string sections, to the deep vocals. I think the collaborative atmosphere of this track is so exciting and refreshing that I could listen to it over and over.

My only qualms concerning this track would be the fact it may get lost in all the contemporary rock being produced these days. I think their next album, which is to be released early 2010, will make up for this and present to the new and old fans; a great, very original record.
