I saw Basic Shape live recently and they instantly got my attention. They have certain knack for writing songs that seem familiar, yet are something more than that. They have a quality that is uniquely their own, whether it be the Australian accent, the delightful harmonies or simple yet convincing song structures, Basic Shape are a band that seem to be going places.

Single Rainy Day is a perfectly nice little song that showcases the talents of the band more than adequately. The double bass line compliments the neat little acoustic guitar and is rounded out by understated percussion that only kicks in to highlight the chorus some. Despite singing of drowning in rain and losing love, the lyrics are set to such a bright melody and sung in such sweet harmonies to lift the mood triumphantly. A perfectly nice little song.

Here it is backed up by B side Sweetie Pie, a tacky little number complete with comedy vocals and lyrics. It certainly isn’t my cup of tea, but then it is just a B side. In this modern age of downloads and ringtones, it is actually a nice touch to include a fun, non album song with a single just for the heck of it. It shows another side to the band that is not immediately apparent on the album at the very least. All in all Basic Shape have done well here, and I look forward to their impending new release.
