Flap! - Rock in Space (Single)
With a band name that sounds more capricious than most, it seems like this young fiery five-piece is back to wow the shoes off our feet again. Flap! are a hit among the Australian festival scene playing at such folk festivals as Woodford, Apollo Bay, Melbourne International Jazz festival, Rainbow Serpent, Adelaide Fridge and Port Fairy. They have called the music industry to attention with their buoyant tunes and had us enraptured since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2008.
Flap! is proof that good things come in small sizes. Despite this one track release, they are bound to get you on your feet, head-bopping, toe-tapping, and reliving your spicy young adulthood in style. These Melbourne natives sound like a frivolous mix of upbeat 20’s jazz, folk, and gypsy brass. Think F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby multiplied by a funky New Orleans party with a hint of that Aussie charm we all know and love.
Rock in Space is bursting with a sensational trumpet solo that, I won’t lie to you, took me by complete surprise. It opens with Jess on ukulele and progresses into an up-tempo hit perfect for a dance with that special someone or that girl across the dance floor. Honestly my ears were waiting for a second solo from Eamon (on trumpet) but it never came, however Jess’ vocal work balanced it out with a performance that showed dynamic and lyrical originality. Needless to say, the release was delayed but at just 3 minutes and 12 seconds this track leaves you wanting to take up jazz dance classes. It’s quite evident that these guys like to boogie!
