Various Artists - Sex and the City Movie Soundtrack (Album)
Ladies and gentlemen (yes, gents you are included) the fabulous four Sex and the City girls are back with fire! The movie, the hype, the fashion, the cocktails, the witty writing, none would be complete without a soundtrack to accompany and tie it all together. Thankfully we can breathe a sigh of relief, like the latest Manolo Blahnik strappy heel, this soundtrack is the perfect fit for the movie and many other occasions. It is thankfully unlike the previous efforts to provide an adequate musical accompaniment to the TV show in ‘soundtrack’ form.
The Sex and The City Movie is about the quest for labels and love in a big city and appropriately the soundtrack gives musical balance to this quest. A predominant question that is themed throughout the movie is ‘Are you in love’? The answer according to the soundtrack is in All Dressed up in Black, by Jennifer Hudson. It was entirely appropriate to cast Hudson (who plays Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant in the movie) in singing the love song that underpins one half of the message of the movie, and she gives a stellar performance again. The other side of the movie’s theme is the search and the longing for ‘labels’, I loved how the movie intertwined the two in that sometimes we look for love in designer labels and sometimes we look for ‘relationship labels’ when we are in love. The theme song performed by Fergie is a creative and funky twist on the TV show’s opening theme with clever lyrics and typical rocking Fergie beat, and the message? Perfectly summarized with the line “Relationships are often so hard to tame, A Prada dress has never broken my heart before” – preach it sister!
This soundtrack has such a delicious array of music adequately depicting the beauty of the movie and can be used as a collection of anthems for whatever ‘relationship place’ you are in. Ready to look for that lifetime love? Fallen in love with someone who isn’t interested in love at the moment? Mercy,by Duffy. Lost a lover and living with out them? The Heart of the Matter, by India Arie. Enjoying life just hanging with friends? New York Girls, by Morningwood.
The genius effort of music producer Salaam Remi, who remixed some old classic rock songs into modern pieces, is bound to inspire a mood for getting the make-up applied, heels on, and feet moving into a funky grove.
I couldn’t go without mentioning the beautiful rendition of the traditional New Years Eve song Auld Lang Syne, though I wouldn’t recommend it as a precursor to a night out on the town but perhaps a slow song to croon along to with you best mates or to have an intimate dance with a loved one. The old Scottish poem recreated into a soothing melody, by Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis, perfectly represents the old bonds of friendship between our favourite four girls.
Whether a fan of the Sex and The City Movie or preparing a group of friends for a night out, this soundtrack will go down a smoothly as a Cosmopolitan cocktail.
