When first hearing Melbourne band Skybombers, you will be propelled right back to the garage rock and roll sounds of the 1960’s. This quartet of 21-year olds sound is a mix of 1960s garage pop, 70s rock and roll, early punk, 90s grunge and Britpop, evidence of influences from such bands as The Kinks, The Clash, Oasis and You Am I.
Having already taken LA by storm, packing out the Roxy Theatre and receiving airplay on indie radio stations, I was determined to find out what the hype was behind this band. They have recently released there national debut EP Sirens, which kicks off with debut single 'It Goes Off', a foot tapping danceable tune, giving the listener some promise of what was to come. The entire record however is quite cliché, especially in the track 'Revolution' with its marching band like drumming and predictable lyrics such as “…want to be there at the start…” and “…you will be set free…”. Other tracks sound very much the same as each other and I found 'So Come On' quite cheesy.
They have the right sound, style and plenty of ‘baby's’ and ‘come ons’ in their lyrics, but I have found this EP to be relatively boring, repetitive and cheesy, not quite the music their idols would have made back in the day. Their sound certainly has room to mature and develop into their own style, let’s just hope this occurs before they release an album.
Skybombers are currently touring as part of the Rock for Schools Tour along with Oh Mercy and Operator Please between May 7th and August 24th.
