After the previous success of their Self Titled debut, and Outta Sight/Outta Mind, The Datsuns have stuck to their guns and given us more of the same in their third album, Smoke and Mirrors. If you haven’t gotten into the Datsuns, this probably isn’t the first album you should buy. Get yourself a copy of their debut, you might have even heard of some of the songs before. The third album is still much of the same as the previous two efforts, instantly recognizable crazy guitar riffs and Dolf screaming in true rock fashion.
The third album expands somewhat on their songwriting abilities with such tracks “Stuck Here for Days” and the epic closer “Too Little Fire” which just seems to drift along for perhaps a bit longer than it should. However, this wouldn’t be a Datsuns record without something to pick your ears up, and this time around the ridiculously catchy “System Overload” will have you tapping your foot and shouting out “Count down to Explode! System Overload!” much to the amusement of anybody in a 50 metre radius.
“What are you stamping your foot for” is classic Datsuns, with “Maximum Heartbreak” and “Waiting For Your Time to Come” are other tracks which instantly put a strong hold on the potential of how good this album could be. However, the last few songs seem to fall apart, and let the album down which is a disappointment. However, if you liked the Datsuns previous albums, you’ll like this one. It’s got a great DVD (limited edition) that shows some great footage from live concerts on their tour of NZ in Jan/Feb 2006. Smoke and Mirrors is an album that doesn’t quite translate the Datsuns live, but after checking out the DVD, you’ll want to make sure you see them next time they are in your area.
