children collide social currency

There’s a lot of meaning etched into Children Collide’s latest single Social Currency. For a song that’s short and punchy, it fights within itself with conflicting notions of the excesses of society’s materialism and coping by, basically, adapting. Sounds heavy? Don’t worry, because there’s more than social commentary to be gained from this single.

The Melbourne trio, who have been responsible for some of the more exciting live sets from an up-and-coming band of late, show that they can effortlessly commit their live energy to disc. Vocalist Johnny Mackay’s abrasive and raspy punk voice gives a wild edge to the dark, brooding repetitions of bass and drums in the verses. In keeping with the contrasts within the song, the choruses emerge as waves of raucous energy; Mackay now screaming ‘so-so-social currency’ with screeching guitars backing him.

On Social Currency, Children Collide deliver a uniqueness and individuality lacking in a lot of music these days, it’s no wonder Triple J have picked up the single so eagerly. It’s a perfectly assembled quite-loud / stop-start type of song, held together by an Eastern-guitar inspired break and ending with energized repetitions of the chorus. Children Collide have already delivered on the singles front and continue to impress live. It isn’t stated lightly that their forthcoming debut album is shaping up to be a very promising release.
