Land of Talk - Some Are Lakes (Album)

Album reviews for Land of Talk:
» Some Are Lakes - Land of Talk

After being sick and cooped up in hospital for seven weeks earlier this year I have found myself terribly out of the loop as far as new music is concerned, but when I was given the new LP from Land of Talk entitled Some are Lakes I still thought ‘Great, just what the world needs yet another two-bit indie band.’ But I was proved incredibly wrong after listening to the first track Yuppy Flu and by the time the last track Troubled had finished I was pleasantly surprised by the album.

Land of Talk has been touring with bands like Broken Social Scene, Tapes n Tapes and possibly the worlds most underestimated Indie/Folk band The Decemberists over the last two years and these bands’ influence has sneaked into this quietly brilliant album.

Singer/Songwriter Elizabeth Powell’s voice is very distinct and is well accompanied by the rest of the band and the quality of music is held well through out this ten track LP. Some are Lakes has a very summery yet melancholy and regretful sound.

Whilst the album is consistently good, the stand out tracks are Yuppy Flu, a song that is simplistic in its sound but very enjoyable and is quite similar to the tracks on the bands debut EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss. As the album moves along you can hear how Land of Talk have subtly evolved their sound, Track 6 titled It’s Okay has a very similar sound to songs found in The Decemberists back catalogue but Land of Talk have somehow given this song their own distinct sound. The final track on the album Troubled is a an acoustic track, is very melancholy but a brilliant song to end the album. The only weakness in this album would have to be track eight, entitled Corner Phone. It has a bit more of a rock sound and whilst it is a good track, Corner Phone does not really fit in well with the rest of the album and somewhat disrupts the flow of the album.

Some are Lakes is well polished album and reminds you that summer is definitely on the way. If you enjoy listening to the likes of Rilo Kiley, The Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie or if you are looking for something new, you will definitely enjoy this album.
