something with numbers stay with me bright eyes

The new single from Something With Numbers features 3 songs; title track Stay With Me Bright Eyes, the jazzy The Night Before, and acoustic track Zombie.

Something With Numbers are, I’m proud to say, an Aussie band. Yay! They’re a light rock band with some pop and punk influences, out from New South Wales. I saw them earlier this year at the Adelaide Big Day Out; as I recall, they were one of the opening acts on the main stage, and they performed a very decent live set, setting people up happily for a long day of moshing. Their studio work also seems quite polished, judging from this record.

By far the best song on the track is the title track, Stay With Me Bright Eyes. It’s a very catchy pop-rock song, featuring many typical ear worms such as couplet-style sung verses, short catchy guitar riffs, clapping, and an explosion of sound in the chorus. Simple, yet highly effective, it will have you dancing in your seat. It strongly reminds me of Birds of Tokyo’s Silhouettic for some reason…

The other songs are not quite as catchy and radio-friendly, but good efforts all the same. The Night Before is a lazy, winding track that mixes slow verses and sporadic loud/quiet choruses and breakdowns in a style very reminiscent of Wolfmother. Zombie is a serene acoustic guitar track, which has a sweet sound when coupled with singer Jake’s high, innocent vocals.

An interesting little disc. It worked for me; I know I’ll be keeping an eye out for the album release in September. If you like light rock, then I suggest you do also.
