The Red Paintings - Streets Fell Into My Window

The Red Paintings hail from Geelong, yet they certainly don’t sound anything like any current Australian bands. They are more or less an orchestral band with an art rock kind of edge. On their latest single ‘Streets Fell Into My Window’ they have a dark edge that reminds me slightly of a stripped back version of My Chemical Romance. Their existing fans will probably be sick at the mention of such a comparison, yet this song does garner comparisons, even if it is far more operatic.

The Geelong group have been based in Los Angeles for several years now and are also independent these days, and have funded EP’s and various releases with donations in the past. ‘Streets Fell Into My Window’ is the first single off the forthcoming and brilliantly titled ‘The Revolution is Never Coming’.

The strange thing about this song is that it really isn’t new. A Song titled ‘The Streets Fell Into My Window’ featured on their 2006 ‘Walls’ album and along with being nearly identically titled, it is nearly the same song, only some voice overs are really the main difference. The new version is re-recorded and sounds a lot better, but it is baffling why they are using this song again, let alone as the lead single to their new album.

The song (the new version) has it’s moments but also parts of it annoy the hell out of me. Look up a bit at the cover art, as strange as it sounds, it sounds exactly like that picture looks. I like it usually when music matches the cover, because the cover should put you in the right mindset to listen to the enclosed music. The cover here is dark, as is the song, yet the cover is also quite amateurish looking, not that the music is, however the song is rather self indulgent due to some of the lyrics.

The album version, which is also included on the single, like the ‘Walls’ album version includes voice overs that are seriously very creepy, but also incredibly stupid. For example, the music falls away at the end of the song and you hear simply ‘Do cats eat bats?’ being repeated.

This song could have been very good and parts of it certainly are. However unnecessary elements and ridiculous voice overs wreck it.
