Various Artists - Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox (Album)
I must admit the title of this album piqued my interest because I know a Chris Knox. Evidently it’s not the Chris Knox, but he’s definitely a Chris Knox nonetheless. Whilst this friend of mine is indeed a lovely fellow, I was very curious about why he’d had an album dedicated to him – featuring some truly wonderful musicians.
Chris Knox of ‘Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox’ is a grand figure in the Kiwi music business. He suffered a stroke on the 9th of June last year. This album features thirty three different artists performing his songs, free of charge, in an effort to raise money to go to Chris’ rehabilitation.
Even in ignorance of the cause of this record I was nothing short of impressed by the quality and depth of it all. Now, informed, I’m moved.
This fellow was clearly a great, richly talented man and the support he’s had rally behind him in the production of this two disc compilation is wonderful.
Now, before I cry – let’s talk music.
Track eleven on disc two, is without question a highlight. The Mountain Goats put out some pretty brutal songs in their own right, but John Darnielle’s rendition of Brave, coupled with his spoken tribute to Knox is truly damaging. What’s good to know is that you can go to www.chrisknox.co.nz and listen to some of his original versions of the songs. It was definitely a musical education that I required.
The rest of the songs are equally great. Such a diverse range of things have been done with Knox’s music: from folksy whimsy to electro experimental. I’d go so far as to say that if you can’t find something to like on these CDs then you’re not much of a music fan. It’s the diversity of styles that allows one to see how good the lyrics are.
Finally, I’m not impressed with myself in not having been familiar with Chris Knox’s music beforehand. If you’re not already conversant in his work, I think this would be a great introduction. Go out and get yourself a copy.
