Crooked Saint - Sweating Bullets (EP)
It’s been almost six months since the release of Crooked Saint’s wonderfully impressive debut EP Every Angry Inch, and now, Tim Wheatley is back with a full band for round two.
The Sweating Bullets EP sees Wheatley team up once more with long-time collaborator Michael Badger, plus two (Johnny Grant and Troy Ramaekers), for a shorter but fuller-sounding set of four.
Although not as immediately striking as Every Angry Inch, Sweating Bullets still retains the grimy alt-country style that made Crooked Saint so interesting before.
Whilst “Lazy Bones” charges along with fervent energy and a chorus that will be in your head for days, the other three tracks are much more gentle. The sorrowful tone of “Cast of Yesterday”, and the paranoia-tinged “Sweating Bullets” are still catchy and distinctly Crooked Saint despite their lack of pace.
“Man in Waiting” sees the return of the banjo-laced beat and subtle harmonica to round out an album that serves as a mellowed but pleasing follow-up to Every Angry Inch.
Hopefully with a few more tracks under their belt we’ll finally see some more touring by Wheatley and his crew, as these songs are just screaming to be played on a darkened stage somewhere.
