I haven’t heard any music from these guys since I saw them at The Annandale last year but apparently they have since been signed to Sony BMG and buckled themselves down in the studio to record a full-length CD titled Take Me To Town.
The opening track On + On is a great introduction for the band. A pop rock song with melodic phrasing in the hook chorus can be an easy way to imagine the public learning the song “It goes on and on she says “C’mon” but all I wanna do is say goodbye to you” and it even has a scenario that a lot can relate to: “I didn’t have too much to say, But after 15 drinks I blew it all away”
Following that song Always Complaining has a starter riff that reminds me of a track off the Josie and The Pussycats soundtrack (yes the Rachel Leigh Cook Babysitters Club girl one). Now the Skybombers probably wouldn’t approve of that comment but I really don’t think it is that bad, as this is pretty catchy just like the Josie songs. Besides you would have to think they have some sort of twisted humour considering the song is upbeat and feel good even though the topic is about a bad aspect of someone “She’s always a kick in the teeth”.
Overall these are a fantastic collection of rock songs with a bit of punch to hit the pop masses. I especially liked the vocal layering they start inserting in ‘1,2,4 To The Floor’ but as I heard them live first I can’t help but ponder what they are missing on their record. It lacks a certain element that I can’t seem to put a finger but remember from the day of The Annandale gig. Maybe the record just sounds more pop than when you get to see it live.
Now I know all the high-energy rock is what attracted the big wigs enough to sign them up but my favourite track on Take Me To Town (and quite a surprising one) is the song entitled Eleanor’s Lullaby. A tribute to The Beatle’s ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and pondering on their lyric “Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name, Nobody came” it is the slowest track of all but the sweetest as the acoustic guitar makes an appearance and cheeky pop reference lyrics of Rolling Stones and Beatles is always amusing: “Eleanor Rigby I know, She lives up on Abbey Road, She don’t know Sgt Pepper, I don’t think he met her, But if they do I’ll let you know”
It is always a privilege to get a sneak peek of an album that has yet to be released but when it does come out on June 7 do yourself a favour and get it so you will have a Reason To Live and carry out those Teenage Dreams. Let the Skybombers show you around and take you to town.
