Celadore - The Bright and Blue (EP)
Melbourne 3-piece Celadore have offered up one of the year’s most exciting local releases with their four-track beauty The Bright and Blue. Recorded at Red Door Studios and produced by Chris Cheney himself, the EP showcases this young band’s impressive songwriting skill and penchant for a well-crafted live sound.
From beginning to end, their honest, stripped-back brand of rock is played out with conviction and maturity despite vocalist Michael Cooper having a somewhat typical pop-punk voice. It’s only on opening track “Bakery” that it doesn’t work in the best way possible though, as the rest of the EP welds together perfectly.
Single “Kinks in Armour” has already received considerable attention in the music media, and it’s easy to see (or hear) why when you experience it’s early 90’s style riffs and varying vocal pitch.
“Monsters at the Public Hall” and “Burn Down the Lighthouse” both get off to a slow start but are so rewarding in the end, as their beautifully guitar-driven melodies and lyrics stir up a range of emotions.
The Bright and Blue is a brilliant collection of songs that highlight the many strengths in Celadore’s sound, and although they’re a new and fairly young band, you can barely tell when you listen to them. A solid follow-up to their debut EP, and a reassuring look at what we can expect from them in the future.
