Having spent more time than they probably care to mention writing and recording their debut album, complicated by a series of band member changes and overseas trips, Blackchords finally offer up a single in the shape of These Lights. It may just have been worth the wait.

These Lights is a slow burner. The introduction of subtle piano and vocals over haunting guitar is reminiscent of Coldplay, but before they ruined it for everyone. The static drum beat brought in on the second verse is hardly an indication of the song building, which only serves to make the epic bridge wash over you like a warm ray of sunshine coming out from behind the clouds. Suddenly the song comes to life in a manner Pink Floyd would be proud of, before quietly ending as she began.

B side At World’s End is a more jagged number, showcasing another side of the band that makes you look forward to the album even more. Each chorus breaks in after gentle piano with harsh guitars and something closer to a beat you can dance to. Think U2 being pushed aside by Franz Ferdinand. The abrupt end to the song accentuates the harshness of it all even more.

It may only be a taster of things to come, but based on this evidence the Blackchords have a clear vision for their music and the talent to see it realized. Back in the country for a time, with upcoming shows and the impending album release, the Blackchords are soon to gain the recognition they surely deserve.
