Laura Imbruglia - Why'd You Have To Kiss Me So Hard?

Laura Imbruglia’s music is unlikely to be mistaken for her sister Natalie’s. While the older and more famous of the two sisters is known for polished pop, Laura seems to revel in quirky tunes delivered in a proud Strayan twang.

Laura’s latest tune 'Why’d You Have To Kiss Me So Hard?' continues this approach, but there is a definite move towards both pop and polish. But fear not: the charisma is still there. What has been added is a subtlety and confidence not found on the silly fun of her self-titled debut or her unashamedly indie follow-up The Lighter Side of...

The reasons for the growth could well be Laura’s move from Sydney to Melbourne; her touring schedule with The Eels, the Gin Club and Adalita in the past year; or her collaboration with producer Liam Judson on the new song.

What we are left with is a song with a simple structure, stripped-back approach, assured vocal delivery and no-nonsense guitars. It clocks in at 2.49 so it doesn’t over-stay its welcome. Yet it’s on subsequent listens that Why’d You Have To Kiss Me So Hard? reveals its charm.

This is a song that manages to be almost Aussie pop/rock, almost radio-friendly fare and almost woe-is-me heartbreak. The good news is, Laura has managed to steer clear of cliché, immitation and parody to deliver a charismatic tune.

Let’s see what is next for the younger of the singing Imbruglia sisters....
