ME working life

I often find it difficult to judge a musical venture on the basis of one song; it’s hard to understand the artists dynamic fully, where their musical direction is headed, what genre they fit into (if any) and if they actually have what it takes overall. For these reasons, and especially in this day and age where we all want to get value for money when listening to, buying or downloading new music; a single song, CD Single release, I find hazedous.

7” Vinyl rarely omitted the B-Side, so why should the CD Single? But this isn’t what we are taking about. We are talking about the highly impressive song; Working Life by Melbourne based four piece; ME.

I mention the B-Side factor, as minimum requirement for a single, but in the case of ME, I require an EP; simply on the sheer basis of Working Life being such a great, well crafted, musical opus of a track. I want to be assured that this isn’t a one of. That this unique style of song writing is something the band embrace in all their tracks, and that (IF or WHEN) this band ever manage to get an EP/Album out there I will not be wasting my time in persuing it/them - ME – whatever…

Sorry for my ramblings – I do it sometimes, but after repeatedly listening to this one track (more for pleasure, than reviewing purposes), I am desperately craving more music from these lads…

Onto the track it’s self though. Waking Life opens with a disjointed montage of phone bells and chimes and bings, before erupting into a rhythmic, punchy guitar thump, vocals and lyrics of a catchy sing along nature, before breaking down into a operatic soundscape. Stop-Start melody and simply beautiful arrangement of pace and build. Infact the build within this song is so impressive and subtle that it creates a unique shine, not heard or seen as often as many of us would like in much of the less talented artists releasing music so often these days. The conclusion of the track is reminiscent of what Muse do with their (often) over the top guitar scapes, but for the better part, ME sound more like Sparks’ musical, rollercoaster, carnival-esque, theatrical rock.

On the basis of this one track, ME are a band I (and you should too) be looking and listening out for. My very meagre complaint of not having more tunes on this single to indulge my pleasures is minimal and purely indulgent, but give this track a couple of listens and you’ll know what I mean! But, until then…

“Oh well it’s just another day – laaaaa Dee Da….“
