Mia Dyson is Australia's current reigning smoky voiced blues mistress. She plays a mean guitar, she's a rising star, and she's been to Qatar (okay, maybe not that last one).
Her voice is incredibly distinctive and extremely charismatic, and it has been and will continue to be the key to her popularity. Her songs are good, yes, but her voice and the way in which she performs those songs are what makes her her, and everyone likes Mia. Each of her three albums so far has been nominated for an ARIA, with a win to her name for 2005's Parking Lots.
You & Me is a mixture of old an new. It's a rolling, driven song that is anchored around Mia's angsty vocals. It begins with some pumping drums which are soon joined by some jangly guitar and a bit of grinding solo guitar work. It's more Jet than Muddy Waters, but is that a bad thing? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I kinda like it.
The beat is quite odd. It's like, 5/5 rather than 4/4. Or something. The vocals duskily soar over piano and guitar underneath, with those driving drums forcing the song onwards. This is anything but introspective. It's as much about sex as it is about love, and hey, that's alright. That's what rock'n'roll is all about. And the tone of this song is definitely that of rock'n'roll, rather than the blues of Dyson's previous efforts. Will it see a move into the mainstream for Miss Mia? Maybe...
