When The Herd were invited to appear on Triple J’s Like A Version segment, the band leapt at the opportunity to cover the Redgum classic “I was only 19”.

The song became an instant hit when Redgum released it over twenty years ago and is now in APRA’s top 25 of All Time Greatest Australian Songs. It was political, but most importantly compassionate towards those affected by war, and seemed to match The Herd’s political outlook.

“I was only 19” by The Herd quickly became one of the most requested songs on Triple J and was voted in at number #18 on the Hottest 100 countdown.

John Schumann heard their version on Triple J and contacts were made with the group to give his approval. The Herd then toured Adelaide and John took them out to a Chinese dinner where he told anecdotes of life on the road. It culminated with The Herd inviting John to come to Sydney to perform with them at the Homebake festival and record in their Enmore studio.
