A rainbow of hippy-bush-doof-left-wing-message-music right? Maybe. But there’s no denying the funk of this collective, and there’s definitely no question as to their authenticity. The ice-cream sundae that is BKB may not appeal to everyone, but the sweet and soul satisfying percussion form an ice-cream and wafer base on which all else builds, while the nuts of melodies are sprinkled across just right, making sure every mouthful is delicious, and the socially aware lyrics provide the extra cherry on top that some live for, and others put aside.
“We have respect for the indigenous people of Australia and we support their struggle for justice and equality. The true history of this country is rarely discussed, and it is rare that the education system deals with such issues which I find totally outrageous, we are all working towards a positive and peaceful relationship between indigenous and non indigenous and the sooner our government decides to take this issue on and actually do something about it the better. We are musicians, we do it through music. It’s about everyone doing their bit, just discussing it is a great place to start.”
As the old saying goes, from humble beginnings, great things grow. Having recently signed overseas with Guerrilla Management (home to Michael Franti and Spearhead), this rings true for BKB too. “It feels great, we have waited a long to find the right management team and Guerrilla is perfect!! We’ve only been working with each other a short time
and great things are already happening.”
Some fans are apprehensive of the move, hearing warning bells of their favourite sundae becoming a plastic wrapped sugar on a stick product available in all major supermarkets. However the band themselves are quie comfortable with the idea.
“To be quite honest I hope our is music is considered to be popular and makes it into the commercial scene because that’s where we can make a big difference with what we’re doing. We will always remain true to our sound and mission, no matter what. A lot of people get scared when bands make it into the mainstream and think you're a sell out, but great things can come from that.”
Great things indeed. Great things to be shared with their loyal fans and friends; what does Blue King Brown want their audience to take from their music?
”We want them to take the music as a means of celebration, dance, and life, and also to take away the message of which we’re singing. To be inspired to make positive change in this world, and become part of the ever growing movement that is taking on the responsibility and changing the world!”
