Bright Yellow

For a band that has only been performing together for two years it is amazing to read the list of shows they have done. Bright Yellow originally started playing high school assemblies before moving into battle of the bands and finally doing regular rounds in Sydney and the Central Coast also playing festivals such as Come Together. All this touring created a lot of buzz and had the trio receiving some major label offers, but it was newcomer Boundary Sounds that managed to snatch the trio. “We wanted a label which would be willing to accept our ideas and allow us the freedom to work at a pace which was comfortable for us and with the people we chose” Jeff (bassist) explains. A relatively new label but not slow on their uptake, Bright Yellow’s first record ‘Love’s Not a Comfort’ is released on November 6.

To record the EP, the trio had used the prize they won from the ABC Newcastle Music Awards (best alternative track) that involved free recording time at the 301 Studios in Wollongong. After getting in contact with Matt Lovell (whose previous credits include The Mess Hall, One Dollar Short and Something for Kate), “We recorded over two days, keeping a live raw feel, hoping to keep it as close as possible to our live sound… We found it amazing how different a song can be made to sound simply through the production and mixing, so we tried to keep the sound real”.

Not giving too much away, the EP contains five tracks but then everything Jeff tells us about the EP from this point is quite confusing. They describe the songs as ones “they still love to play live” but then also mentioned “looking forward to the release of the EP and touring, so we can move onto something fresh” I think I get it guys- you want it to be a surprise. Although I think I can confirm one track ‘Outta my Soul’ which is their first single and also a track you can preview on the band’s MySpace. One piece of information Jeff did give out was that “The songs on the EP were written by Chris (singer and guitarist) and then put together by Bright Yellow” although they insist they don’t have a formulae. “We’ve written many songs in a lot of different ways, sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t”

To support this new release they have coupled it with a tour that is currently on the road as we speak. Their shows read much like their gig history ranging from Rebel Rebel to high school shows. Bright Yellow feel that by getting a range of audience is a way to get their debut EP noticed. “We thought that high schools were a good way to put together underage shows”. Plus keeping that range gives them a way to discover new music “We’ve met and seen a lot of great bands. Some of the festivals and tours have allowed us to see some other great Australian Music like The Sleepy Jackson, Wolf and Cub and Gyroscope”. The tour continues on until November 25th and includes a range of bands playing with them including, Regular John, Ratatat, The Rocketsmiths and I Heart Hiroshima.
