Strap yourselves in ladies and gentlemen as Australia’s ride to sonic insanity has already begun. No folks, I am not talking about a mind-blowing amusement park ride, I’m talking about a band of 4, hosting the likes of Eddie Jacobson (lead vocals, guitar, samples), Olly Thomas (percussion, samples, vocals), Dave Crane (bass, vocals) and Damien Green (drums, vocals). They are the talented blokes of Butterfingers.
Over the past few years the group has been forging a name for themselves with out-of-the ordinary hip hop sounds, full of rock, pop, dub and beats. After their first album release in 2004 with Breakfast at Fatboys, Butterfingers are back and raring to go with their new album The Deeper You Dig… .
Following the new album release, earlier this year, the group kicked off their national tour the deeper you dig, hooking up with fellow hip hop poppers TZU and MC Lars.
"I had seen TZU play at a festival that we did over in WA not that long ago … [and] It’s always nice to fill with people who you get along with, and I got along with them pretty well. I had listened to their album and loved it," Eddie Jacobson says.
The tour has been successful, by all indications, however the second leg of the Butterfingers tour (starting July 18th) will host a slightly different line-up.
"We are not doing any with MC Lars, but a band called School Fight from Brissy … and also a band… who actually share some members…"
According to Jacobson the reaction has been great all 'round.
"It's been nutty, lost of crowd surfing, I don’t know just general craziness I suppose… they seem to go a bit nut’s down the front… at least they are having fun."
As well as touring, the group have been busy with the release of their first single “Get up outta the dirt”. Along with a catchy sound the video clip it quite successful in not only catching viewer's attention but catching their curiosity too.
"We had a few ideas and as they all slowly got crossed off the list this is what we ended up with, the concept basically is…there is this guy who is supposed to be getting married and I decided to drag him around in the dirt for a while, and while his wife is running after him trying to get him back… and then eventually he climbs up the rope onto the buggy I am dragging him by …And then he ends up getting married and dragging me around in the dirt after that."
Although Butterfingers have been super busy working hard and enjoying success, they too have kept an eye on what’s hot right now.
"Well locally I'd say The Herd’ are awesome [and] ‘Hilltop Hoods' are awesome…‘The Grates’ they're great...There are heaps of Brisbane bands I’d love to say but unfortunately a lot of them have broken up and stuff now… I listen to so much stuff …I can’t really give…a main kind of influence‘.
Butterfingers front man Eddie Jacobson has voiced his approval of playing live in the past, stating…‘playing a gig seems to make this whole ‘being in a band’ thing real’.
"I guess a typical band scenario that people really get to see is usually the gigging part of it… when you play gigs you actually have to be interacting with people and … everything sort of comes to life."
For those heading along to see a Butterfingers' gig this tour, you're in for a passionate and fun show.
