With the new single ‘Nothing Much Happens’, Butterfingers have been doing everything but ‘Nothing Much’, busy with their very own label ‘Valley Trash Records’ The Dwarf rang Eddie to chat about the new single and their upcoming Australian tour.
The Dwarf: Gday Eddie or should I say ‘evil’ Eddie, how did you score that nickname?
Eddie: There were two Eddies when I was working at the Zoo, and naturally I was called the ‘evil’ one.
The Dwarf: Now this is the same place where you also played your first gig, I read about how you had signed to play without having the band together, how did you get the guys together on such short notice?
Eddie: Well we all sort of already were in our own bands; between us all we had a few actually. So I just got together the usual suspects I suppose.
The Dwarf: Wow, I didn’t know this! Very Interesting, what types of bands were they?
Eddie: Well I could name them all for you.
The Dwarf: Yes please. Go for it.
Eddie: Well ok, there was a band called ‘Curl’ which was the exact same line up as Butterfingers except me, they had a female singer up front., which was more like your alternative rock type music. Then there was a band which had all three other members from Butterfingers expect me again, this was called ‘Slapstick’ and was more like your 70’s style funk band.
The Dwarf: so this must be where the funky bass influences come from.
Eddie: Yeah, yeah I guess so. There was another band a heavy metal one that Dave and Damo were in, but Damo used to play guitar in that not the drums. And then there was a band called ‘Cable’ which we were all in, and that’s a punk rock style band.
The Dwarf: Very cool, do you guys have any plans to bring these bands back with the ‘Valley Trash Records’ Label?
Eddie: The idea has been thrown around, to put out an EP with like all the ‘Cable’ songs on it. Sort of like a punk rock album but under the Butterfingers name. But its still been thrown around.
The Dwarf: I noticed how wide ranged the bands music influences are when I found an old Rage guest appearance you guys did back in 2004. But I have to ask who picked what…Suicidal Tendencies – 'Possessed To Skate', a huge favourite of my own.
Eddie: That would have been Ollie
The Dwarf: Tom Waits, who has one amazing voice!
Eddie: Dave…
Eddie: (laughs) No mine was The Muppets – 'MaH Na, Mah Na’
The Dwarf: so you only sing in the band? Any instruments?
Eddie: Oh, yeah I play guitar, but only in the punk rock kind of songs. In the hip-hop songs I’m up the front rapping.
The Dwarf: Has Butterfingers ever released anything internationally?
Eddie: Never, ever, ever. But we’ve all really really wanted to do it, go everywhere UK, Europe, and one day soon we will.
The Dwarf: With the new single release ‘Nothing Much Happens’ which is brilliant I might add, it seems very radio friendly, and the female backup singers has this been done before.
Eddie: Well sort of, you know there’s still a lot of swearing on there, it is just a little less subtle. I'd say the references to Gary Glitter in the shows at prison, not so radio friendly (laughs)
The Dwarf: (laughs) Oh yeah and the ‘Rag Stick’ part!! I suppose you are right.
Eddie: And the girl backup, I’m sure we have done that before, maybe in I love Work and few others but it’s just not as noticeable.
The Dwarf: so the single must belong to an album, when can when hope to see that released?
Eddie: We aren’t really sure yet, at the moment we are just concentrating on the single, but hopefully by mid next year.
The Dwarf: The clip to the new single ‘Nothing Much Happens’ and also ‘Get Up Outta The Dirt’ are done both done very well.
Eddie: I really enjoy doing them too, I actually get to rap in this one, well you know I kinda have these aspirations in the back of my mind to maybe act one day I don’t know how real that’s all going too turn out (laughs)
The Dwarf: Well Eddie our time is up and I cant wait to see you all on stage soon.
Eddie: And thank you too.
Make sure you get to see the energy that Butterfingers so naturally deliver as they tour Australia this November.
