Working tirelessly on their follow up to the epic debut album The New Normal , COG have been recording with producer Sylvia Massey (who has produced albums and tracks for heavyweights such as Tool, System of a Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers) since January and it will please fans back home that the boys from Bondi will be down for some shows in June, AND have released the title for the forthcoming album as Sharing Space. TheDwarfs Kevin Bala had a quick chat to COG bassist Luke Gower, calling from Weed, California about the progress of the upcoming album.
How much longer until the new album is done?
Luke: Umm, Probably gonna be another couple of months I think, We're coming home in June just to play some shows and to see our families and whatnot, so hopefully the majority of it will be done by then, but we might have to come back and finish off a few things.
What has the reception been like for Cog in the U.S?
Luke: Yeah, it's been good, you know we've only played a handful of shows, so nothing out of control or anything. But you know we've given it a good go, it seems to be a good response from all the people, so it's been great!
What is the idea behind the name Sharing Space?
Luke: I think the idea was something we came up with after a lyric kinda popped up in a song.
We just thought it was a good universal term and something that everyone could definitely relate to. You can look at it in a number of ways, but really its kinda just a universal message.
You guys have released some behind the scenes footage on Myspace, tell us about that?
Luke: Yeah, we thought that would be a little fun thing to do, Lucius (Borich, Drummer) kinda took charge with that one and it ended up being a tour of where we are at, and where we eat almost, all stuff like that (laughs). But its pretty funny, I actually enjoyed it, I didn't know how it was gonna turn out, it was fun.
Do you feel as if the live show experience will change any way when you come back to Australia?
Luke: I think naturally we have always wanted to step things up the more we've gone along, in terms of lights and gear and stuff, making it a big show. But you know, at the same time we won't be doing anything out of the ordinary, unless I was feeling spontaneous of some sorts.
I dunno, it kinda just unfolds on the night!
You guys have the Boomerang tour coming up and also a huge Come Together Festival, What are you most looking forward to?
Luke: Yeah, it's gonna be great for us to come home, obviously to see the family and friends, and doing the shows, which is gonna be awesome. We haven't played in Australia for 5 or 6 months, so it seems overdue, and it should be really good. Especially playing with the bands that are playing at Come Together, it will be great to catch up with those guys, and to play at Luna Park where I haven't been in years. Hopefully they still got the slides there, I loved those things!
Finally, what are COGS plans for the rest of year?
Luke: Well yeah, after the album is out, obviously we wanna tour it, so there'll be shows, and we'll try and come back here ( U.S) ,depending what's getting released here. We'll try and play some more shows, really try and get it started over here, put some yards in.
To make it worthwhile u gotta stay here for lengths of time, makes it more financially feasible, its kinda like starting again. We're no one over here mate! (laughs)
Cog will be boomeranging back home for a short run of tour dates in June.
