Don’t be fooled- Dukes of Windsor are more than a one-trick pony. The Melbourne rock-electro band are more like a freakin’ stable of trickster horses, if you ask me. Burgeoning out from their massive TV Rock collaboration, The Others, Dukes are back with a sparking first single from upcoming album, Minus, due for release in August. The Dwarf had a right old chat with DOW’s Oscar...

So, what are you up to, copper?

“Well! We’ve been getting our album done, mixed, mastering, we’ll have it out in the middle of the year I suppose!” Oscar seems palpable, ready to burst, but, wouldn’t you be if you were in one of Australia’s biggest new bands? I think you would, don’t lie. “There are certain parts of our sound we’ve expanded which were exited by” Oscar says on the band’s latest sound, “with the first album we were just trying to find our feet. It’s a lot more danceable, it’s exciting, the electro influence has come , but there still a lot of guitars, after all, we are a rock band.”

Okay, you’ve sold me on the album, sir, but why should the average punter come out to see youse (besides the fact that Dukes begin a national tour this week, no plug intended)? “We try and give it a lot of energy. Getting up on stage, it’s more than just reciting songs, we jump around a bit, Jack might disappear into the crowd...we just want people to get excited, we want people to feel like they can rock out to it. With our songs, were just trying to make them as elegant and smooth and flowing as we can, without betraying our particular style, were not trying to redefine music or change the world, we just want people to have fun, that’s the main thing”

Oscar, I have to ask you a very serious question. If fruit lived in a society together, which one would be king? “I am holding the very piece of fruit that should be king” Oscar responds, quick-smart, “Fuji apple is the only apple that deserves to be eaten. All others apples are inferior, except maybe Granny Smith. It’s not exotic, but it’s reliable, always crunchy, always sweet....maybe mango could be sultan of some faraway land...”

Ha-ha, now I love you. Anyway, what’s your take on the whole iRevolution? Seeing as you’ve just put latest single “It’s A War” up for free download, the whole downloading thing surely doesn’t bother you too much? “Yeah, but I do love CDs, I love the effect you get. You get a high quality sound and something physical, you feel like a part of it, the case, the cover...it’s definitely gonna be interesting to see how the whole downloading thing turns out”.

Being from Melbourne, do you get to see many of the countless local acts doing the rounds at the moment? “It’s so hard to get out and see bands, because were so busy, but I do like Near Your House, Worlds End Press, and Dardanelles. Because there’s so many bands in Melbourne, it always encourages you to be really good, it can promote hard work but at the same time don’t consider it competition!”

Dukes of Windsor begin a national tour May 21st: get into it!
