Kora

Renowned for their amazing live show, New Zealand band of brothers Kora will be bringing the party to Australia this February. The Dwarf chatted to Brad Kora about what fans can expect.

Your Myspace informs me that you guys are currently working on a new record. How is this progressing?

We've been so flat tack with touring, but we finally get into studio this winter. So you can expect an album summer this year!

Kora has toured Australia several times to a lot of success. What do you think it is about your music that makes it so accessible to Australian audiences?

It's different I guess. We love putting on a really good show for the people. Our style is to treat every gig like it's the last. I think it’s great seeing the Aussie crowd raging hard to a Kiwi band.

There have quite a few New Zealand dub style bands break through internationally, is it a pretty vibrant scene over there?

It's honest. Kiwi music has a conscious feel about it. You know when you hear our music, it's from the heart.

The band has an extremely cool website set up like an old arcade game. Being a band of brothers was there much competitive video gaming growing up?

Haha. We all come from the 80s 20c era. Growing up involved Martial Arts movies, arcades and making hutts. I just purchased a new arcade cabinet with 1600 games on it. It's everything from Donkey Kong to Street Fighter 2. There were some crazy competitions going on then. Man it got to the point of fist fights.

What is the best and worst thing about being in a family band?

Best thing is playing with my family. That’s home away from home. Worst thing-family knows everything about yah, haha.

Hypothetical: You're playing a festival for the first time to a crowd who's never heard your stuff. What's the go to opening track to get people dancing?

We like to test the waters and open up has heavy as possible. By no means is it dancing. But it's more of a test of how true we are to our music.

From your experience of playing live who are better dancers, Aussies or New Zealanders?...be honest.

Aussies know how to have a really good time. Kiwis are cool but a bit staunch at times.
