“It's really about making sure that everyone knows that they are a part of something that’s much bigger than themselves”, states enigmatic Mammal vocalist Ezekiel Ox, explaining the meaning behind the name of the bands debut full length release, The Majority.

“All our ideas are all the same, we’re very much kinda dealing with the idea of people engaging with each other and understanding that they can actually change the world. I think it is a really strong release and we are all extremely happy with it!"

Revolutionary hard-rock Melbournites Mammal have good reason to be happy. The guys have just released their debut album, and, as Ox claims, they have maintained a focus on capturing the ‘live Mammal experience’ in the studio. "The studio experience was fantastic! We got to work with a really incredible producer, Eric Sarafin, who has worked with Ben Harper; he's more a blues-and-roots kinda guy. We didn’t do any of the recordings with click tracks so it sounds very unique,

We just really focused on having a live feel and a really positive energy”.
"We pretty much just tackled it head on, took it as it came and worked hard on it”, Ox states of the recording process.

“All of us in Mammal have been writing records for a long time now and we just kept chipping away at it. The entire process was actually pretty smooth. We just kinda went in there and did it... we're not really the kind of band to over analyse things. We're not curing cancer, we're just trying to make music for a bunch of people, give them the chance to dance, and maybe talk about some ideas. We really enjoy doing that, instead of trying to over analyse it."
”It's a different tone to any stuff I've done before with Full Scale (Ox’s former band), and even with Mammal, there's a lot less aggression; it's still as angry as it ever has been but it’s a lot more of a party vibe. So I'd just really encourage people to check it out for themselves, its hard to put into words what we have done. It’s just a really strong vibe."
Mammal are kicking off a national tour next week, followed by a run of festivals including the Grazzhopper Fest in Geelong along with Shihad and Grinspoon, Open Arms Fest and the Pyramid Rock Fest. Zeke states that they are just happy to be doing what they do best. He also explains how Word-of-Mouth has been a pivotal factor to the bands success on the live scene.

"It's been all about word of mouth for us, we had a very strong sense of that. It's really the people, the fans that are there and the people that buy our records are the people who make Mammal survive and allow Mammal to achieve all our goals. We can't thank them enough! We pay it back of course; we are a band that thinks we bring something unique to the live experience, so we're really proud of what we're doing. We believe we're a good value for money band!

Im really looking forward to play this new record in front of everyone, and continuing to push the name of Mammal live. We still have a long way to go, and we're stoked at where we are at. We're just really looking forward to taking the show on the road again, and giving people what they want- which seems to be the live experience!"

Zeke also plays in a side-project entitled Ezekiel Ox and The Fury, who have just played their first national shows. Zeke tells us what the plans are for the rest of the year and 2009, which includes some acting!

"I'm gonna be playing the role of Hedwig in the theatre production of Hedwig and The Angry Inch in Sydney and Brisbane. That should be interesting.

Next year Mammal will be heading over to the States. It will be nice to get a release over there, there's plenty of bands who haven’t been able to get anything released there, but I think Mammal will have a lot of success.

"I'm a lot wiser from the experience with Full Scale and I'm more ready than I ever have been. So hopefully we can just get over there and conquer the States!"

Mammal’s Debut Album, The Majority is in stores now.
