Exploding onto the live Australian music scene in just a matter of months and promptly establishing themselves as a ‘must-see’ live band, hard-rock act Mammal are merely just beginning their world conquest. Describing their music as “like a freebie lap dance whilst watching the news,” Mammal comprises an unparalleled sound; featuring elements of metal, prog, hip-hop, punk and raw rock combined with revolutionary lyrics and a blistering on-stage persona.
Forming in early 2006, Mammal were quickly invited to join progressive rock heavyweights Cog on tour, and soon thereafter signed to booking agent TPA (who also represent massive contemporary rock bands such as Shihad, Silverchair, Karnivool, The Butterfly Effect and The Living End.) But the guys from Mammal maintain that they are not just another ‘overnight success’ band.
“We were honoured to be invited out with a band of Cog’s calibre, but the concept of ‘overnight’ success is an illusion. Our live show (which is what has been turning heads) is the result of years of experience coming together in a new form of musical chemistry.”
In relation to the bands formation, they state that the coming together of Mammal was in fact a very organic process- having ¾ of the members hailing from other disbanded groups, (Ezekiel Ox - Full Scale, Zane Rosanoski - Jika, Pete Williamson - The Stonemasons.)
“Relationships had been formed previous to the bands formation. The actual coming together of the four of us was very fateful and serendipitous”
“I think we’ve all learned many things from past projects and all those experiences make us stronger as artists. It also makes us clearer in what we don’t want.”
“(In writing and recording the EP)…the process was quite fast and spontaneous. A lot of the tracks were written instrumentally initially, vocals went down, then working and reworking took place in the rehearsal room to develop and shape each song. We are still evolving, so it’s hard to say.”
Mammal are currently doing what they do best, and what got them into the limelight; touring hard and presenting the blistering mammal show to all of Australia. They have recently been announced as supports for international hardcore act 36 Crazyfists, and are billed on a number of huge festivals including the Pushover fest, Come Together, MS fest and Overcranked, which they are prefer slightly over the smaller, intimate gigs.
“We enjoy it all, but we have to say big crowds, big P.A’s and bands that push us with their shows take the cake. You can’t beat the main-stage. As far as what we look forward to: introducing ourselves to new audiences and showing them how exciting a Mammal show can be.”
“Touring, touring, touring, songwriting, songwriting, songwriting on tour, touring whilst songwriting,” is whats on the 2007 calendar for Mammal. It may be some time before Australia is subjected to a full length release however, in the mean time there has been discussion of a live album to be released soon.
“We recorded a show in Melbourne recently. We will wait until the time is right, to unleash it upon Australia.”
“We’re writing, touring, and working on it (full length album)! We’re in no rush, we want it right. But rest assured, when it comes, you will not be able to stop the rock!”
Mammal is definitely a band who shows no signs of slowing down. The evolution has just begun.
